New events to mark this year's Thunder in the City

MEADVILLE — Thunder in the City, the annual free family fun classic car and motorcycle festival, has some new events with this year’s fifth anniversary — a motorcycle competition, a Corvette parade and a scenic bike run.

The event, slated for Aug. 2 and 3, is hosted by the Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce in downtown Meadville.

This year’s event kicks off on Aug. 2 at 5 p.m. with the Channellock Challenge bike competition where the public will get to vote on its favorite motorcycles in a multitude of categories. Also at 5 p.m. that day is the Lang Motors Car Cruise-In. The band, “Porcelain Bus Drivers,” takes the stage downtown at 6 p.m.

On Aug. 3, a Corvette parade has been added in conjunction with the annual Rusty Hanaway Memorial Bike Parade of motorcycles. A scenic bike run also is set for that afternoon.

Classic cars will be parked around Meadville’s Diamond Park Aug. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a kids fun zone at the Diamond as well.

The motorcycle and Corvette parades both will be at 10:30 a.m. that with both using Route 322 to arrive in downtown Meadville. A scenic bike run for motorcycles is scheduled to depart downtown at 3:30 p.m.

There will be “Open Market” shopping along Chestnut Street from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with both vendors and area stores participating.

A motorcycle and auto swap meet is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Downtown Mall.

There’s also a lineup of musical entertainment Aug. 3 with a number of bands playing: “The Grayhounds” at noon; “Splitting Charlie” at 2 p.m.; “Familiar Spirit” at 5 p.m. and “Rick & the Roadhouse Rockers” at 7 p.m.

Event sponsorships and vendor space are still available for the fifth annual Thunder in the City. Those interested in sponsorships or in vendor space may call the Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce at 337-8030.
