In a surprise move, Harry Hicks announced during PENNCREST School Board’s monthly meeting that it will be his last.
Leading into the May primary election season, Hicks, who was serving his first four-year term on the board, announced that he would not be seeking a second.
During Thursday night’s meeting, he said he was stepping aside due to personal family issues.
“I regret leaving, but I have to,” Hicks said.
At the suggestion of board member Tom Morgan, the board gave Hicks, a resident of the district’s Maplewood attendance area, a hearty round of applause.
“I will miss being here — and I miss being on the Crawford County Career & Technical Center board,” said Hicks, who also represented PENNCREST on CCCTC’s joint operating committee. “But I need to be with my wife more.”
Superintendent Connie Youngblood said she respected Hicks’ decision.
“Family comes first,” she said.
Hicks told the Tribune after the meeting that while his wife has been urging him to remain on the board, health issues make spending more time at home his first priority.
Youngblood said Hicks’ formal resignation will probably be accepted during the special board meeting scheduled for June 27 to pass the district’s 2013-14 budget “and any other matters that may come before the board.”
The special meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the district’s administration building in Saegertown.
Once his resignation is accepted, the procedure and timeline for selecting Hicks’ replacement will be announced, Youngblood said, noting that the vacancy will be advertised.
Members of PENNCREST School Board are elected to serve the district at large. Each seat on the nine-member board is for a four-year term that begins during the first week in December following the November election.
Thursday night’s meeting was also the last for Board Secretary Linda Mangus, who has also served as secretary to the superintendent. In appreciation of the years of service leading up to her retirement, the board gave her a standing ovation.
