Accused in string of bar robberies pleads guilty

MEADVILLE — A Meadville area man faces up to 20 years in jail when he’s sentenced next week in Crawford County Court of Common Pleas for his role in connection with a series of Crawford County tavern robberies last July.

Harry Boyer Jr., 45, of 9588 Kennedy Hill Road, pleaded guilty Thursday in county court before Judge John Spataro to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, a first-degree felony. Boyer faces a maximum of 20 years in jail and a $25,000 fine when he’s sentenced on Monday in county court.

Boyer had been scheduled to go to trial next week in Crawford County court on multiple felony and other charges. However, Boyer struck a plea deal with the Crawford County District Attorney’s Office.

Boyer, 45, was charged by Pennsylvania State Police with conspiring with co-defendant Michael Ferguson, 37, of 9662 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, in connection with the early-morning armed robberies of three area taverns in 2012 — The Owl’s Nest near Saegertown on July 22; Nate’s Bar and Grill in Greenwood Township on July 22; and the Double D Bar in Venango on July 30.

As part of his plea deal, two additional counts of conspiracy to commit robbery, three counts of robbery, two counts of theft by unlawful taking and one count of attempted theft by unlawful taking filed against Boyer will be dropped.

Boyer had testified for the DA’s office against Ferguson at a preliminary hearing in the case back in September as part of a potential plea bargain.

Boyer is expected to testify against Ferguson if Ferguson’s case goes to trial in county court. Ferguson’s trial is scheduled for this September’s term of county criminal court.

Following Thursday’s plea, Boyer was returned to the Crawford County jail in Saegertown in lieu of $60,000 bond.
