Mark your calendars for Dec. 7 as downtown Meadville hosts a variety of free, open-to-the-public events to celebrate the start of the holiday season with Light Up Night.
The Friends of the Market House kick the evening off with a Light Up Night reception from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Meadville Market House. From 5 to 9, enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides around downtown Meadville.
The Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce is organizing a holiday decorating contest for downtown businesses. Secret judges will visit participating stores to check out the decorations and holiday snacks. Winners will be announced at the Light Up Night festivities. A list of participating businesses will be provided closer to the event so the community can also visit and enjoy the merriment. Businesses wishing to participate in the contest should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 337-8030 for an entry form. Cost to enter is $10.
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” festivities at Diamond Park will begin at 5:30 in the Gazebo in downtown Meadville. COOL 101.7FM will kick off the celebration with Christmas music. Join us for Grinch activities beginning at 6 include the presentation of the community tree decorated by First National Insurance Agency, sing-along Christmas carols with area royalty and the youth choir of Calvary Baptist Christian Academy, and the reading of the official proclamation to Light Up Night Meadville 2012 by Mayor J. Christopher Soff. Complimentary hot chocolate by Wesbury United Methodist Community and cookies will also be available courtesy of area royalty.
Santa Claus will arrive at Diamond Park to help with the lighting of the Christmas tree and lead a parade down Chestnut Street to the Downtown Mall. Santa will stop briefly at Chestnut Street and Park Avenue as he waves the lights on at shops@thebank and at Chestnut and Market streets to light up the Market House before heading to the Downtown Mall on Water Street. Once at the Downtown Mall, Santa will hear Christmas wishes and pass out candy canes.
An addition this year is a food drive to benefit the Center for Family Services. Non-perishable items can be dropped off between 5:30 and 6:30 at Diamond Park or from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Downtown Mall.
