Camp Cadet training starts today

MEADVILLE — Allegheny College hosts the annual Troop E Erie Camp Cadet program for the third consecutive year. Cadets begin training today, and graduation is Friday at 6 p.m. at the Wise Sports Center on Highland Avenue.

The camp provides young men and women ages 13 to 15 from Crawford, Erie, Warren and Venango counties the opportunity to undergo intensive training by Pennsylvania State Police troopers, much in the same way PSP cadets undergo training at the State Police Academy in Hershey.

Cadets attend classes on PSP radar operations, drug interdiction programs, building searches, traffic stops, how PSP members investigate crime scenes, operation of the Clandestine Emergency Response Team (CLRT), use of drug K9 dogs and deploys its Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). Members will introduce cadets to numerous other investigative tools and special units.

Cpl. Dana Stewart of the Bureau of Criminal Intelligence Computer Crime Unit will explain dangers about predators who prey on young adults over the Internet. He’ll describe how information (pictures, messages, identity, etc.) can be captured, compromised and used by cyberspace strangers.

Cadets’ daily rise is at 5:30 a.m. and they retire at 9:30 p.m. Each day includes extensive physical training and vigorous marching training.

The Troop E Camp Cadet program celebrates its 40th anniversary this month. Nearly 2,000 young men and women have graduated from the camp since 1973.
