Arson plot yields prison sentence for Meadville woman

MEADVILLE — A Meadville woman has been sentenced in the Crawford County Court of Common Pleas to five to 20 years in state prison and ordered to repay more than $130,000 in connection with an arson plot more than five years ago.

Kris A. Undereiner of 1108 S. Main St., was given the five to 20-year sentence with 198 days credit on Thursday by President Judge Anthony J. Vardaro. The judge ordered Undereiner to pay $132,870.85 in restitution  of insurance proceeds plus a $500 fine and court costs.

Undereiner faced a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine on the charge.

In February, Undereiner, 41, was charged by Meadville police for an arson five years ago at her address. Police allege she set the fire in order to collect insurance money.

The case had remained unsolved until this year after a tip was received from a confidential informant, according to Paula DiGiacomo, first assistant district attorney.

Undereiner pleaded guilty in county court in July to one count of arson endangering persons, a first-degree felony, in connection with the Feb. 22, 2008, fire as part of a plea bargain with the Crawford County District Attorney’s Office.

As part of the plea bargain, a total of nine other charges including three other arson counts as well as insurance fraud and endangering the welfare of a child were dropped.

According to the criminal complaint in the case, Undereiner intentionally started a fire at 1108 S. Main St. to collect insurance money; intentionally misled and defrauded Foremost Insurance by making a false claim from a fire that was intentional; and endangered a 12-year-old child who was inside the residence at the time Undereiner set the fire.

If she had been convicted in county court of all 10 original charges against her, Undereiner had faced a maximum of 120 years in prison and $190,000 in fines.
