Community invited to King Day celebration

MEADVILLE — More than 20 years of civil rights celebration continues with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Fellowship Dinner, an event dedicated to the clergyman, activist and Civil Rights Movement leader honored on the day of his namesake.

Sponsored by United Faith Fellowship Church of God, the event consists of a traditional southern cuisine dinner as well as as essay presentations from Meadville-area youths on various civil rights topics.

The banquet will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at St. Brigid’s Church Social Hall, 383 Arch St., Meadville.

“The community of Meadville is invited and encouraged to attend this celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said the Rev. Berta Newsome-Jones, pastor of United Faith Fellowship Church of God, in a press release.

King was a “tremendous and courageous man who fought for all mankind to share in equality and justice, which is the hallmark of this great country,” she added.

This year’s dinner will feature guest speaker the Rev. Charles L. Davis, associate pastor of Jones Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Elyria, Ohio.

Davis, who grew up in Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement, reportedly became the first and only African-American SWAT officer in Cleveland, Ohio, for 11 years.

He is expected to share his firsthand experience as well as relevent life lessons in honor of King, who dreamt of and contributed toward “a better world for our children,” Newsome-Jones wrote.

Previous keynote speakers included the Rev. Dr. Cheviene Jones, also representing Jones chapel AME Church in Elyria.

n Reservations: Call 336-4124. Tickets for next Monday’s banquet are $10 per person.
