Watchful eye being kept on ice jam north of Meadville on French Creek

WOODCOCK TOWNSHIP — Local emergency management coordinators are keeping a close watch on an ice jam that could lead to flooding along French Creek just south of Hayfield Township.

Emergency management in Crawford County reported the ice jam at the McGuffytown Bridge on French Creek just after 4 p.m. on Saturday. The bridge is located on State Route 19 near U.S. Bronze Foundry & Machine Inc.

Allen Clark, director of Crawford County Emergency Managment Agency, said it is unknown what immediate threat the jam imposes.

“The temperature is getting cold,” Clark said. “The ice jam probably isn’t going to move until it gets warm again. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with it, if it stays, if it does move or if it melts.”

Clark said one residence located near the jam, which stretches farther than the eye can see according to eye witnesses in Saegertown, was close to being flooded Saturday evening and two others could be impacted.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the area.

All downstream Emergency Management Agencies were notified of the jam, according to Clark, who said the situation is being closely monitored.

Clark said everything north of the jam in French Creek appears to be clear, but there is still ice south near Meadville.

“If it does move again Fifth Ward and Wilson Chute are the next two areas of concern,” Clark said.

As of Saturday evening, four area roadways have restrictions due to flooding. Clark said a portion of State Highway 173 in Wayne Township is closed. PennDOT announced lane restrictions for State Road at the intersection with State Route 322 in South Shenango Township, Route 19 at the intersection with Route 285 in Greenwood Township, and Linesville Road at the intersection with Wheeler Road in Conneaut Township.
