Police: Man tried to run over previous stabbing victim

Meadville Tribune

MEADVILLE — The Meadville area man accused of stabbing a city man last month was jailed Wednesday night on new charges for allegedly trying to run over the alleged victim Tuesday in downtown Meadville.

Richard Kolcun, 53, of 11362 Williamson Road, Meadville, was jailed Wednesday night on Meadville Police charges of aggravated assault, retaliation against a witness or victim, terroristic threats and reckless endangerment.

Those charges were filed by Meadville Police Tuesday after Kolcun allegedly attempted to run down William Bonus, 42, near Water and Walnut streets.

Kolcun and Bonus were involved in a knife fight March 28 at a Liberty Street home with Kolcun stabbing Bonus in the chest, police said. Kolcun was charged with aggravated assault and simple assault for that incident, but he had been free on $20,000 bond and was awaiting a preliminary hearing on those charges April 25. He will now have a second hearing on the new charges, also on April 25.

Police allege that on Tuesday, Kolcun was driving his vehicle when Kolcun spotted Bonus near the intersection of Water and Walnut streets and drove onto the sidewalk in an attempt to hit Bonus.

Police said Bonus jumped around the corner of the building behind him to avoid the vehicle and Kolcun drove away. However, a small plastic piece fell from Kolcun’s vehicle during the incident and it was recovered by police at the scene.

The piece was linked by police to a small piece missing from the passenger side mirror on a red Jeep registered to Kolcun, according to the arrest affidavit filed Tuesday.

Authorities began searching for Kolcun after Bonus had reported Tuesday’s incident to police.

Meadville Police, with the assistance of Pennsylvania State Police, then began searching for Kolcun on Tuesday. Kolcun was located by authorities about 5 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Mercer Pike and Route 285 near Cochranton.

At Wednesday night’s brief arraignment before Magisterial District Judge William Chisholm, the judge ruled Kolcun unbondable since Kolcun had violated bond conditions in the stabbing case. Those conditions included Kolcun not having direct or indirect contact with Bonus if Kolcun posted bond.

Police allege Kolcun stabbed Bonus in the chest with a knife at a home at 831 Liberty St., the afternoon of March 28. Police said both men were fighting with knives, but what prompted the fight hasn’t been released by authorities.

Bonus was taken to Meadville Medical Center by Meadville Area Ambulance Service for treatment of a single stab wound to the upper torso but was released from the hospital March 31.

Police found Kolcun early the night of March 28 at his residence on Williamson Road in West Mead Township and took him into custody without incident. Kolcun was jailed March 28 in lieu of $20,000 bond, but posted bond on March 30 and was released.
