Crawford Central seeks new board member

VERNON TOWNSHIP — Accepting the resignation of Crawford Central School Board member Kevin Maziarz will be on the agenda when the board meets for its monthly meeting Monday night at 5:30 p.m. in the district’s instructional support center in Vernon Township.

The acceptance of Maziarz’s resignation will open a 30-day window for the board to fill the vacancy without court intervention.

To be eligible for appointment, “an individual must be a citizen of Pennsylvania, have a good moral character, be at least 18 years old and have resided in Crawford Central School District for a least one year,” according to a press release issued Wednesday by the district.

Interested candidates should submit either a letter of interest which sets forth their qualifications or their resume to Charles E. Heller, III, Superintendent, Crawford Central School District, Instructional Support Center, 11280 Mercer Pike, Meadville, Pa. 16335. All letters or resumes must be received by Heller no later than May 3 at 4 p.m.

After conducting interviews, the board is expected to make the appointment during its May 20 monthly meeting.

The term of the appointment will begin May 20. Although Maziarz’s term ends in 2015, Pennsylvania’s election law requires that a vacancy be filled at the first municipal election occurring more than 60 days after the resignation. As a result, the appointment will end the first Monday in December when newly-elected school board members take their oaths of office throughout the state.

The remaining two years of the four-year term will be filled during the November election. According to Emily Leader, acting chief counsel for Pennsylvania School Boards Association, a provision in the state’s election code allows each party to place a candidate on the ballot for the municipal election if, as in this case, the vacancy occurs too late for candidates to meet deadlines for participation in the preceding primary.
