Allegheny students work to help trailer park get bus stop shelter

MEADVILLE — Allegheny College art students working with local engineers to construct a bus shelter for a local mobile home park has launched an online campaign to raise funds for the project, which is sponsored in part by the Crawford County Area Transportation Authority (CATA).

A group of 11 students working through the college’s Art & Environment Initiative utilized the crowd-funding site in hopes of raising at least $12,000 by July 17 to build the bus stop at Asbury Manor East in Meadville’s Fifth Ward.

Donations are being accepted at “The Bus Stops Here: A Shelter For Asbury Manor.”

If met, the initial funding goal will fabricate the shelter, according to campaign reports, while additional funding would facilitate creative designs, such as a rain garden, solar panel and other ideas.

The final design will be determined by the total funding received.

The shelter project, conceived last summer by 2012 Allegheny graduate Emma Cook, was publicized by Vernon Township Engineer Ashley Porter at the Township Board of Supervisors regular meeting earlier this month.

Porter Consulting Engineers plans to collaborate with students to help shelter an estimated 40-plus Asbury East residents who utilize public transportation, particularly CATA’s red route, which serves Meadville and Vernon residents, Porter said.

Other organizations partnering with Allegheny College and the Art & Environment Initiative include Asbury Manor Mobile Home Park East and Meadville Plate Glass.

Prospective construction dates have not yet been released.

Anyone wishing to assist with the project can call Porter Consulting Engineers at 337-4447.
