More patients, doctors behind renovations at local cancer care center

VERNON TOWNSHIP — Meadville Medical Center’s 5-year-old Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute is set for renovations to accommodate additional physicians and an increasing number of patients.

In a news release issued by MMC, Valerie Waid, vice president of clinical operations, said, “When we opened our doors in May of 2008, we were treating about 500 patients, with two medical oncologists and one radiation oncologist.  Today we are treating more than 4,000 individuals. Our patients are driving from Crawford, Erie, Ashtabula, Warren, Venango, Mercer, Forest, and Clarion counties, to name a few. To handle our growth, we have added two new medical oncologists: Dr. Thomas Young and Dr. Zulfiquar Hussain. We have also extended our hours in medical oncology. To accommodate our new medical oncologists, we are adjusting the interior of our building to allow for more physician offices and exam room space. Additionally, we have taken this opportunity to redesign our radiation area, with added convenience for our patients. This includes a separate entrance for our radiation patients, so they can be dropped off and immediately enter the radiation waiting area.”

Ron Mattocks, construction coordinator, said, “Construction is to be completed by Associated Contractors Inc. in early November 2013. We are happy to have local support.”

The Oncology Institute is a state-of-the art whole person cancer center that features the most advanced chemotherapy and radiation therapy services specifically prescribed to meet the individualized needs of each patient.  Focusing on a mind-body-spirit whole person approach to cancer care, the center provides patients and their families with stress-reduction opportunities for creative expression through a creative arts program.
