Meadville's real estate tax rate to remain unchanged

MEADVILLE — Real estate taxes levied by the City of Meadville will remain at the current level of 20.42 mills in 2014.

By a margin of 4-1 with outgoing Councilmember Nancy Mangilo-Bittner casting the sole dissenting vote, councilmembers approved ordinances adopting the city budget and setting tax rates during their last meeting of 2013 on Wednesday night.

With one mill equaling $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value, a city residence with the median assessed value of $25,000 will continue to pay $510.50 per year in city property taxes.

During the first and second readings of the proposed budget earlier this month, Mangilo-Bittner said she voted no because city taxpayers should receive a reduction in property taxes in exchange for the added expense of the stormwater management fee imposed in late 2012.

In other City Council business:

One appointment and two re-appointments were approved Wednesday night.

Kerstin Martin was appointed to the city’s Shade Tree Commission to complete the unexpired five-year term of Jacob Moore, who recently resigned. The term expires Jan. 1, 2015.

Larry Nicolazzo, who was appointed to Meadville Area Sewer Authority to fill the unexpired term of John Battaglia when Battaglia resigned to take a seat on City Council, has been appointed for a five-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2018. The current term expires Dec. 31.

Donna Cessna, whose term expires Dec. 31, has been re-appointed to a five-year term on Meadville Area Recreation Authority.
