Cambridge prison gets new superintendent

HARRISBURG — HARRISBURG — Joyce Wilkes, a 23-year corrections veteran, has been appointed superintendent at the State Correctional Institution Cambridge Springs, Secretary of Corrections John E. Wetzel announced Tuesday.

“Joyce’s overall DOC experience and knowledge will serve the staff and inmates well,” Wetzel said. “I am confident in her ability to operate the prison in line with the DOC’s mission of protecting the public, while offering inmates opportunities to changes themselves for the better.”

Wilkes’ appointment became effective on March 3.

She began her career with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as a corrections counselor at SCI Camp Hill in 1989. She was promoted to corrections classification systems analyst at Central Office in 1991. Wilkes then transitioned to acting executive assistant to the commissioner.

She moved to SCI Greene as a unit manager in 1995 and was promoted to deputy superintendent for facilities management at SCI Cambridge Springs in 1998. In 2003, Wilkes transferred to SCI Albion as deputy superintendent centralized services. She returned, in the same capacity, to SCI Cambridge Springs until her recent appointment to superintendent.

As superintendent of SCI Cambridge Springs, an institution for female offenders, Wilkes is responsible for more than 300 staff and approximately 1,000 inmates.

Wilkes is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in rehabilitation education. She also earned a master’s degree in business administration from Waynesburg College.
