Up to a foot of snow expected through Friday in northwestern Pennsylvania

Very cold temperatures combined with howling winds and snow will make travel difficult in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio, according to the National Weather Service.

Crawford is under a winter weather advisory through 1 a.m. Friday with the possibility of as much as a foot of snow falling by late tonight while wind chills could be at zero or below and visibility down to a quarter mile at times, according to the NWS based in Cleveland.

The culprit behind the storm is a low pressure system that will move across the Ohio Valley today, the NWS reports.

As the low pressure system moves across the area today, winds will shift to the northeast and north, increasing in intensity and causing blowing and drifting of snow, forecasters say.

New snow accumulation of four to six inches is possible today with a high of about 20 degrees. That temperature combined with winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour may put wind chilll values at as low as minus 5 degrees today.

Another one to three inches of snow is possible tonight and the low temperature will dip to about 2 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow from today and tonight combined with what’s already on the ground will put the storm total between six and 12 inches.

With winds from the north at 11 to 17 mph, the wind chill values may be as low as minus 12 tonight.

The temperatures are expected to rise to a high of 12 on Friday with wind out of the north at 6 to 10 mph, pushing wind chill values as low as minus 11 on Friday.
