CONNEAUT LAKE — There’s just something about seeing an 1,100-pound giant pumpkin dangling nearly 100 feet over the top of an unassuming-looking old car that puts anticipation in the air.
And the outcome of all that anxious waiting is a big hit — literally.
Spectators numbering easily in the thousands crowded together Saturday to watch giant pumpkin drop at Conneaut Lake Park, which along with Saturday’s 100-plus-unit parade is one of the signature events of the annual Pumpkin Fest,
Those who may have missed the giant squash do its squashing on Saturday have the chance to see it again today — with a new pumpkin and a new (old) car, of course — as the fest, now in its 18th year, continues throughout the morning and afternoon.
This is the fifth year the pumpkin drops have been included as part of Pumpkin Fest, according to organizers. But that’s not the only thing drawing bustling crowds into the park. Dozens of daily activities include pony rides, pumpkin painting and carving, a bearded fire eater, chain saw carver Tim Klock from Altoona, an auction, a book fair and more.
The festival, which regularly draws more than 25,000 people over its three days, is presented by the Conneaut Lake Area Business Association.
Admission is free, but there is a $3 fee for parking in the three lots outside the park.
