Staff of the Crawford County West Nile Virus Program has been monitoring the mosquito breeding locations and has conducted larviciding activities throughout the county while monitoring adult populations in areas of concern, with more spraying scheduled for tonight.

In response to a high mosquito counts collected in the four locations — Route 27 (Hunter’s Inn area), Guys Mills, Littles Corners routes 102 and 198, and Woodland Mobile Home Park area in Vernon Township — the program will conduct adult mosquito treatments to reduce the number of adult mosquitoes that potentially can carry West Nile virus. There have been no positives mosquito pools to date this season.

Conditions permitting, spraying will be conducted today beginning at dusk. Lowered adult mosquito populations and other unforeseen situations could cause the spray operations to be delayed or canceled. Scheduled sprays delayed by weather conditions such as high winds, rain, temperatures lower than 55 degrees will be sprayed the following day.

Truck and all-terrain vehicle ultra-low volume spraying equipment will be used. There will be no aerial spraying. The Crawford County West Nile Virus Program will use Anvil 10+10 applied at a rate of 0.62 ounces per acre.

The pesticide has no impact on human health or pets and breaks down very quickly in the environment. Adult mosquito control is an important component of an integrated mosquito management system. Residences are asked to close their windows for 20 minutes to an hour after sprayers have passed by and the spray has subsided.
