NEW LOCAL: Edward Gingerich jailed on firearms charge

02/12/08

SAEGERTOWN — A Rockdale Township man who pleaded no contest in October for interfering with custody of a child, was back in Crawford County jail Tuesday.

Edward Gingerich, 42, of 31426 Hogback Road, Cambridge Springs, was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police on charges of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited from having a gun.

Police allege he was hunting Nov. 26, 2007, in Rockdale Township, using a gun.

Gingerich was arraigned before Vernon Township Magisterial District Judge Michael Rossi, acting for Saegertown Area Magisterial District Judge Lincoln Zilhaver.

In October, Gingerich entered the no-contest plea stemming from an incident in April 2007 when he allegedly coerced his 17-year-old daughter to leave her grandparents’ home. The daughter had been living with them since 1993 after Gingerich killed his wife. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but mentally ill, and served five years and one day in prison.

On the new gun charge, Gingerich was committed to jail in lieu of $500,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing set for Feb. 21.

The charge is a felony of the second degree, which calls for a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
