The remains of Sgt. Chester L. Williams of Conneaut Lake, a Korean War veteran, are due to arrive this afternoon in Meadville.
The hearse carrying the remains, and a motorcycle escort, are expected to arrive at the Meadville exit of Interstate 79 between 3 and 3:30 p.m. The processional will receive a Meadville Police Department escort at the interstate, then travel north on Park Avenue to Chestnut Street, then east on Chestnut to Robert W. Waid Funeral Home. An honor guard of pallbearers from Veterans of the Vietnam War Post 52 then will escort the remains into the funeral home.
While no formal event is planned, persons who want to line the processional route may do so.
“It would be a respectful showing and welcome home,” said Fred Cunningham, director of Crawford County Office of Veterans Services.
A funeral for Sgt. Williams with full military honors is scheduled Sunday at 2 p.m. at Greendale Cemetery in Meadville.
Williams was 32 when he was reported missing in action in Korea on Dec. 6, 1950. Williams died of exposure in a North Korean prison camp in late-December 1950.
