The parent of a Second District Elementary School student said she’s sending her son to school today despite her concerns about the shape the school is in as a major renovation project there continues.
But, Debbie Mikelvich said, if dust in the air causes her 10-year-old fifth-grader to have an asthma attack or he comes home to tell her the school looked the same way it did when she visited there Tuesday, “that’s it. I’m not sending him anymore.”
Since the close of the 2007-08 school year, First District and Second District elementary schools have been undergoing major renovations. Second District, on the corner of South Main and Linden streets, has passed on official inspection and has been issued a temporary occupancy permit allowing the school to open for classes today, according to Superintendent Mike Dolecki.
“There’s still work going on, and work remains to be done, but it’s permissible to have school there,” said Dolecki, adding that crews are continuing cleanup efforts daily and that there will be no construction inside the school during the school day.
Still, Mikelvich said she’s concerned about her son’s well-being.
“We do not force anybody to come school,” Dolecki said, adding children who become sick for any reason will be granted excused absences.
The renovation project, which includes updating heating, ventilation, plumbing and electrical systems as well as adding much-needed space to accommodate state-mandated programs, is anticipated to be completed by early 2009, according to Dolecki.
