There’s not a whole lot to 1st Person Shooter, a Toronto-based four-piece outfit. Its musical style is pretty standard for upstart garage bands: three-chord progressions, crashing percussion, and nasal vocals. It’s basically music that’s loud and pretty undanceable unless you consider thrashing around or pogoing to be dancing. These guys still make a pretty good, if not particularly distinctive, racket over the four tracks that comprise this debut EP. The Shanks do a kind of demented, backwater, farm rock held together with a bizarre and semi-disturbing meat/butchery theme. “The Valley of the Shadow of the Shanks” is the group’s second studio EP and, while it’s not particularly inventive, the six tracks aren’t bad for a twosome with a bass guitar and drum kit. But the release is bland, and hard to distinguish from the work of a million other garage bands out there. The sound is fast and heavy but not heavy metal. — JAMES SANDHAM
