Friday's Light Up Night Meadville officially kicks off Christmas season

MEADVILLE — It’s once again time to welcome the holiday season to downtown Meadville with community spirit, excitement and fun.

Friday, the Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Meadville, First National Insurance Agency and Meadville Market House will officially kick off the Christmas season with Light Up Night Meadville 2013.

Friends of the Market House kick off the evening with a Light Up Night reception at, of course, Meadville’s historic Market House, just off Chestnut Street at 910 Market St. From 5 to 9 p.m., cookies and hot chocolate are furnished free of charge and several food vendors will distribute a tasty array of samples as a hammer dulcimer player adds to the atmosphere and artists exhibiting in the Arts for Everyone Gallery demonstrate weaving, carving and painting.

While the festivities are going on indoors, participants may step outside the Market House and onto a horse-drawn carriage for a ride around downtown Meadville, also thanks to Friends of the Market House. Carriage rides are $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

Festivities at Diamond Park begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Gazebo with COOL 101.7 FM putting everyone into a celebratory mood with Christmas music. Activities beginning at 6 p.m. include the presentation of the community tree decorated by First National Insurance Agency; sing-along Christmas carols with Miss Crawford County, Miss Meadville and the youth choir of Calvary Baptist Christian Academy; a variety of other performers; and the reading of the official proclamation of Light Up Night Meadville 2013. Complementary hot chocolate and cookies will also be available courtesy of Pampered Palete.

Santa Claus arrives at Diamond Park to help with the lighting of the Christmas tree, followed by a ride down Chestnut Street to the Downtown Mall. Santa will stop briefly at Chestnut Street and Park Avenue as he waves the lights on at Shops @thebank and at Chestnut and Market streets to light up the Market House before heading to the Downtown Mall on Water Street. Once at the Downtown Mall, Santa will hear Christmas wishes and pass out candy canes.

A free showing of the Bing Crosby classic “White Christmas” at the Academy Theatre beginning at 7:15 p.m. is a new addition to this year’s schedule. Tickets are required and can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce office at 908 Diamond Park or the Crawford County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 16709 Conneaut Lake Road in Vernon Township. The movie is sponsored by DJB Group, Baldwin-Reynolds House Museum and Crawford County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

After leaving the Academy Theatre, be sure to proceed to the Meadville Council on the Arts’ Gardner Theater for the Allegheny Student Experimental Theater’s Improv Comedy Council’s holiday performance. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. in the theater on the second floor of the Meadville Market House and MCA’s Heeschen Gallery is open to the public as well.

The Chamber of Commerce again organizes a holiday decorating contest for downtown Meadville businesses. Secret judges visit participating stores to check out the decorations and holiday snacks. A list of participating businesses will be provided closer to the event so the community can also visit and enjoy the merriment. Businesses wishing to participate in the contest should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 337-8030 for an entry form. There is no cost to participate.

At the Market House, a few trees were still available recently for adoption by groups or individuals interested in participating in the annual decorating contest. At a cost of $10, the trees are already in place and ready to provide an opportunity for artistic holiday expression. All decorating must be done between today at noon and Friday at 4 p.m. Call the Market House at 336-2056 to reserve your tree.
