Original comedy takes stage to lighten holiday mood and aid food pantry

SHARON, Mercer County — The Penn State Shenango Drama Club presents “Homicidal for the Holidays,” an original comedy by local playwright and former Penn State Shenango student Anthony Elliott on Dec. 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the Penn State Auditorium, 147 Shenango Ave.

Elliott’s play combines comedy and murder mystery around a Christmas theme. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children 5 and under. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The production is also a fundraiser for the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County. All proceeds from the Drama Club’s basket raffle and 50/50 drawing will be donated to the Community Food Warehouse, which faces increased demand due to recent cutbacks in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program.

Elliott drew inspiration from a number of holiday sources, including classic Christmas tales and movies such as It’s a Wonderful Life, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and A Christmas Story. As a fan of murder mysteries, he also drew on that genre to create the sometimes sentimental, sometimes hard-boiled, and often wacky “Homicidal for the Holidays.”

“Homicidal for the Holidays exults in a sense of fun, bringing together partygoers dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, an elf, a Christmas tree, Christ and Satan,” said director Jeanne Zingale, theatre and communications instructor at Penn State Shenango. “Add to that mix a detective who must figure out who the murderer is, and you have the ingredients for a show that is full of surprises and lots of laughs.”
