LORI SIMS: Internationally known pianist Lori Sims will perform a free concert on Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Ford Chapel at Allegheny College. She will perform the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in d minor, BWV 90, by Johann Sebastian Bach; the Fantasia (Variations), Opus 25, by Ben Weber; ‘Excursions,’ Opus 20, by Samuel Barber; and ‘Carnaval,’ Opus 9, by Robert Schumann. Her concert at Allegheny College is made possible through the generosity of Meadville resident Charles Shortt, in memory of his wife, Meredith, who was also a pianist.
‘BASICALLY BRITISH’: The sounds of Britain will be the theme of a free concert taking place in Allegheny College’s Ford Chapel on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. This collaboration between the Allegheny College Department of Music and the First Presbyterian Church of Meadville showcases works by composers from the British Isles, ranging from the Renaissance to the modern era. Headlining the concert are the Allegheny College Brass Quintet and Trumpet Ensemble, coached by professor Jennifer Dearden. Solo performers include Dearden and tenor Andrew Daigle, accompanied by Kevin Dill, music director of First Presbyterian Church. This concert also marks the debut of the Kinesis Handbell Ensemble, made up of select ringers from the bell choir of First Presbyterian.
FREE JAM: Every Thursday, 7 to 10 p.m. for anyone looking to play, sing, dance or just sit back and watch, at Wild Country Dance Hall, corner of routes 19 and 198, Saegertown. More information: Ed or Jan, 282-4608 or 398-1463.
COOTIE HARRIS JAZZ JAM: Nov. 3 from 2 to 6 pm. in the Gardner Theatre on the second floor of the Meadville Market House, hosted by The Meadville Council on the Arts. MCA Jazz Jams were started more than 30 years ago, with the foresight and dedication of Cootie Harris. Cootie has worked hard to keep the Jazz Jam alive, bringing in musicians and involving young people so they can learn from professionals. Admission is $5, with performing musicians free. CONCERT BAND OF NWPA: The Concert Band of Northwest Pennsylvania concludes its 2013 fall season in with ‘A Concert in the Broadway Mode’ on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. at the H. O. Hirt Auditorium at Blasco Memorial Library on the Bayfront Parkway. The concert is free to the public and no reservations are needed. Donations to the band are always welcome. FIRST FRIDAY CONCERT SERIES: Edinboro University’s First Friday Concert Series continue Nov. 1 with a performance by Music Department faculty member Erik Mann. The performance will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in the Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center’s Recital Hall. It is free and open to the public. Mann, a classical guitarist, will present a program of works by Brazilian composer Paulo Bellinati. First Friday Concerts, which feature Edinboro University Music Department faculty, are held monthly at the Alexander Music Center throughout the fall and spring semesters.
CHURCH MUSIC JAM: A free, open-to-the-public country, gospel and bluegrass music jam is the first Saturday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m. at the New Apostolic Church in Greenville across from The Medicine Shoppe. No drugs, alcohol or smoking is allowed. All are invited to enjoy and/or to bring their instruments and play.
