Meadville Council on the Arts hosts the Second Floor TheatreFest on Feb. 14, 15, and 16 at 7:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Meadville Market House.
More than 25 playwrights, both local and national, submitted original 10-minute plays but only 15 plays were selected to be produced. Performed as a stage reading in the Gardner Theatre, the Fest has three nights of different plays with an all-Allegheny College student cast. Staged readings highlight the playwrights’ work because the actors will sit on stage and read from a script. However, there is a lot of work involved in this because the actors bring the scripts to life.
Each night there will be a different theme for the plays. Feb. 14 is the Night of Lampoon, which features comedic plays that playfully criticize society. The Night of Religious Parody is Feb. 15 featuring comedic plays that poke fun at religious situations. The final Night of Political Agenda is Feb. 16 and will finish the festival with comedic plays written to question the politics of life.
The TheatreFest also promotes theatre in all of Meadville. There will be information from Meadville Community Theatre, the Academy Theatre, Allegheny Playshop and Student Experimental Theatre for people to read. The Heeschen Gallery will be open for the Annual Members’ Exhibit, which features artistic works from MCA members.
Admission will cost $3 per night, or a $7 cost for all three nights’ admission. There will be an Audience’s Favorite vote every night for the audience’s favorite play. Each playwright who wins the vote will receive a prize sponsored MCA.
