Concert Band to present ‘Meet the Sections of the Band’

EDINBORO — The Concert Band of Northwest Pennsylvania, under the direction of John Fleming, continues its 2013 season with “Meet the Sections of the Band” on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the lawn of Cole Auditorium on the campus of Edinboro University.

Those attending the concert will need to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. In case of rain, the event will be held in Cole Auditorium. The concert is free to the public and no reservations are needed. Donations to the band are always welcome.

“Everyone knows that a concert band is made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments,” Fleming said. “The blending of the tones of the instruments creates the sound of the band. That often means that the audience does not get to hear how each individual instrument sounds. So we are going to feature each section of the band; flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones and tubas, etc.”

The concert consists of works such as “Flutes, Flutes, Flutes” by Edward Madden, “Clarinet Candy” by Leroy Anderson, “In the Mood” for the saxophones, “Cornet Carillon” by Ronald Binge, “The Four Hornsmen” by David Bennett and “Tiptoe through the Tubas” by Joe Burke.

There will also be marches and some surprises. One of the marches will be “Perry’s Victory March” by John Martin, who composed it in 1913 for the Centennial Celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie. Martin wrote it as a piano solo. The band will play the premiere performance of the version for concert band just arranged by Roger Knepshield, a retired member of the music faculty of Edinboro University.
