MEADVILLE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS: Offering numerous workshops at the Meadville Market House — a kids’ clay class, ‘Just Contain It!’ taught by Vickie Clark on Oct. 16, Nov. 13 and 20 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; ‘Just Duct Tape It!’ taught by Clark on Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; ‘Repurposing Vintage Jewelry’ taught by artists Jenn DeMarco Shaw and Megan Whitten on Oct. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; ‘Zentangles for Kids’ taught by Mike Saletra on Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. To register: Call 336-5051 or email

MOSAIC CLASS AT MCA: This class is on Thursdays through Oct. 31 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Meadville Council on the Arts. The basic technique of mosaics will be taught and participants will do several projects. The teacher is Nancy Apple. To register: Call MCA at 336-5051.

WATERCOLOR AT MCA: These classes run six weeks through Oct. 29 on Tuesday and Nov. 12 to Dec. 17 at Meadville Council on the Arts. Beginners class is 3 to 5:30 p.m.; advanced class is 6 to 8:30 p.m. through Oct. 29 and both classes are 6 to 8:30 p.m. for Nov. 12 to Dec. 17. ZENTANGLES AND BEYOND AT MCA: Turn your doodles into works of art while experiencing the boundaries of Zentangles on Saturdays for six weeks through Nov. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Meadville Council on the Arts. LANDSCAPE, SEASCAPE PAINTING AT MCA: This painting class is on Monday for six weeks through Nov. 4 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Meadville Council on the Arts. Participants may use either oil or acrylic paint. Teachers will be Nancy Apple and Mike Saletra. To register: call MCA at 336-5051.

FICTION WRITING IN THE NEW CENTURY AT MCA: Through Nov. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Meadville Council on the Arts, second floor of the Market House, taught by published authors Babs Mountjoy and Kathy Otten. To register: Call MCA at 336-5051.

LAKE EFFECT POETRY CONTEST: Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites high school students to submit a poem to its Lake Effect National High School Poetry Competition. Students in grades nine to 12 may enter one typed poem of up to 30 lines on any topic, in any form. Poems must be the original work of the student. Three prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded. The first-place poem also will be published in Lake Effect, Penn State Behrend’s student-edited international literary journal. Entries must have the author’s name, street address, phone number, email address and grade printed on the top left corner; school name, street address and phone number and a teacher’s name and email address should appear at top right. Homeschooled students can use a parent’s information. Mail entries to George Looney, B.F.A. program chair, Penn State Behrend, 4951 College Dr., Erie, Pa. 16563-1501. Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 31. Winners will be notified by email or phone before Dec. 31.
