Tons of family-friendly fun across the region this weekend


MEADVILLE — FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR ENCAMPMENT: Relive the days of yore on the Pennsylvania frontier at the Eighth Annual Custaloga Town French and Indian War Encampment on Saturday and Sunday at 7 Boy Scout Lane, Carlton. Thrill to the crash of musketry and the boom of artillery as the British, French, and Indians battle for control of the Ohio River Valley. See colonial-themed artwork, learn how to make a quill-pen or carve a powderhorn, and watch artisans and tradesmen practice their crafts from days gone by. Acquaint yourself with local colonial history. Children will enjoy the Native American kids games program where they are instructed how to play authentic games from the time. Walk among the tents of more than 200 re-enactors and view camp life of the 1750s. Listen to lectures on local 18th century history by respected historians. Open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

RED BARN GALLERY & STUDIO: Located on the grounds of the Conneaut Lake Bark Park, Foust Road, Conneaut Lake. Featuring the works of more than 24 local and regional artists, including the newest works by Arts for Everyone participating artists Karen Hoagland, the Conneaut Lake paintings of Donna Donofrio and fiber art by Cheree Frizzell. Weekly demonstrations by local artisans, including fly-tying by Derek Gladysiewski, carousel carving by G. Nowack, wood sculpture by Don Valentine, spinning/weaving by Judy Hanninen and more. Well-mannered canine companions are welcome. The Red Barn is open Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ST. BERNADETTE’S STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: Celebrating its 47th year, the festival is Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. at St. Bernadette’s Church, Saegertown. In addition to fresh strawberries, homemade cakes and ice cream social, the food menu has been enhanced to include a barbecue chicken dinner, pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, and Italian sausage sandwiches with peppers and onions. A children’s drumstick meal is also available. A ticket auction, specialty theme baskets, small games of chance and a grand prize raffle round out the day’s activities.
