Published March 13, 2009 06:20 pm - Women framed: Private collectors art of women to be shown. Art show depicting female subjects coming to NYC
NEW YORK (AP) — An exhibit of contemporary masterpieces focusing solely on female subjects will be shown at Sotheby's New York City galleries next month. The 20 artworks, which are not being offered for sale, are on loan from the private collection of hedge-fund billionaire Steven Cohen. The works include Andy Warhol's "Turquoise Marilyn," Edvard Munch's "Madonna" and Willem de Kooning's "Women III." Sculptures, works on paper and photographs also will be displayed. Sotheby's director of contemporary art Tobias Meyer came up with the idea of a female subject-only show while visiting the Cohens recently at their Greenwich, Conn., home. Cohen and his wife, Alexandra, say they were intrigued with the idea. The works have never before been shown together in public. The exhibit runs from April 2-14.
