Celebration causes controversy among veterans

By Jane Smith

You can go

Theme of the parade and activities for Sanford Kelson’s Nov. 11 event are grounded on the original purpose of Armistice Day — which marked the agreement that ended World War I. It was at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month that the armistice ending World War I was to go into effect.

The local parade will start at the Downtown Mall and end at Diamond Park. Groups are encouraged to march and carry signs with particular messages and can have representatives speak at the rally after the parade.

No weapons or instruments of war will be a part of the parade, said Kelson, noting weapons of war bring back horrible memories to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. “To honor our veterans, this parade will not glorify weapons or war. It is more positive to honor what these fine Americans have served to protect: American freedoms.”

Any group wishing to participate in the parade or have a speaker may call Kelson at 382-4887 or send letters of interest to Meadville Veterans-Armistice Day Parade Committee, PO Box 59, Meadville, 16335.
