Emergency officials monitor creek as ice chunks break loose

MEADVILLE — Emergency officials representing municipalities along French Creek in Crawford County are monitoring the creek this afternoon as large ice chunks with the potential to create ice dams and flooding have broken loose and are headed south.

A significant ice dam that contributed to some flooding in Cambridge Springs this morning broke apart early this afternoon, sending chunks south toward Saegertown and Meadville, according to Crawford County Office of Emergency Services Director Alan Clark. It is likely that those chunks will melt sufficiently and that the creek is wide enough that ice dams will not form, but word was put out to emergency officials in municipalities along the creek to monitor conditions.
